Halloween candy, costume, creatures, craziness--whether you like it or not, it's everywhere! No longer is it simply a so-called innocent, family-friendly dress-up day with homemade hobo costumes, neighborhood trick-or-treating and apple-bobbing parties. It has become a celebration of witches, demons and darkness--and the darker, the better. Many Christian ministries counter-attack with Halloween evangelism tracts and Christ-honoring "Bible hero" parties for kids; church festivals and family fun that says no to witches and warlocks and yes to Christ and Christian values! I applaud them for providing Christian alternatives for our kids!

But what IS it with SPOOKS? What's the fascination? Remember your "little kid" days when the "boogie man" was that shadowy, scary "thing" on a bedroom wall? Remember when you "spooked out" over every little noise and nameless fear? Somehow, the scary turns into the spectacular and now grown-ups pay money to be scared silly at some awful movie or just enjoy a snuggle "in fear" in front of a TV thriller with their best beau! I don't endorse any form of darkness or evil, but I LIKE being "spooked out" within legitimate boundaries! I enjoy suspense, adventure and a sense of danger--a wacky and weird form of personal pleasure and torture, for sure! OK, admit it, so do you!

Well, have I got a suspense-filled adventure for you! Read the Bible--it's filled with mysterious, get-your-attention adventures which no one but God can explain! True stories to hold a child's wide-eyed attention--not to scare, but to show the great power of a great God who can do anything! Come to the Well with me and let's check out some exciting, adventure Bible stories. You'll not be SPOOKED out as in "Halloween" - but you're sure to know we serve a God of the unusual--a God far more creative than His enemy will EVER be!!

A Helping Word...or Two!

The Snake Who Talked!

....now THAT'S spooky! But somewhere in the great plan of God, He allowed a beautiful, elegant, sleek-looking snake to TALK. It got Eve's attention--wouldn't it get YOURS?? The talking snake captured her attention with lies and a misrepresentation of who God was. This clever schemer was such a charmer that he soon had Eve eating out of his hand--an apple, that is (or was it a banana or a peach? Who knows!) The day the snake talked became the day that Eve--and Adam--walked....right out of the garden, in sadness, out of the fellowship of a God who loved them. The snake won.......or DID he?

No way--Jesus Christ came to destroy the powers of Satan, and He did! So don't let that evil snake spook YOU out. He's corrupt, a liar straight from the pit of hell. Do not listen to his evil tales and smooth talk. Do not believe his lies. He will cause you to fear and to experience false guilt; he will depress and oppress you. He will tempt you, deceive you, and destroy you--if you let him! Know that as a child of God, you need NOT succumb to the wiles of the devil. Jesus Christ came to bruise the serpent's head--and He did it once-and-for-all at Calvary. Don't be spooked out by Satan; don't live in spiritual bondage--be free in the Name and through the Blood of Jesus!

The People Who Walked!

....across a SEA on dry land! God's people had reached the end of the trail, the sea in front of them, the Egyptians behind them--that's enough to spook out anybody! But God came to the rescue, just in time, as He always does! God's people must have laughed and shouted and rejoiced all the way across this unusual power pathway. And can you imagine the joy of Moses, who trusted and obeyed God and simply followed divine orders? It was an absolute miracle by an absolute God--who is the Almighty Captain of the sea! But what about the Egyptian army behind them? Sure, they were watching--and fully intended to follow. Why not just play "follow the leader" and keep chasing? Were THEY to ever get the SPOOK of their lives--as a matter of fact, it was the end of their lives. You don't defy a God who defends His people and expect a miracle in YOUR pocket too!

No way--God will not be anyone's fool. You don't "mess" with the patience and tolerance of a righteous God and get away with it. The Egyptians learned that lesson the hard way. Our world is reeling toward the Red Sea....God will tolerate wickedness and perversion only so long, and then comes judgment. God, I want to be in the gang who crosses the Red Sea, not the ones who drown in it! Lord, keep Your believers true and trusting to the end. And help us to understand that You will use whatever means it takes to defend and bring deliverance to Your people. You are God of the supernatural--all hell must stand in awe at Your power and might--and so do we!

The Door That Unlocked!

Now prison doors don't unlock and open by themselves...that's spooky! But it happened--ask Peter who was awakened by an angel and led out of prison into the night and right to the door of a Pentecostal prayer meeting. What a night that was--it spooked out a jailer for sure. He cried out, "What must I do to be saved?" And God saved him and his family; the prisoners were kept safe, and Peter went on to proclaim the gospel. The events of a night like that would soon get your attention--if you didn't know God, you'd be spooked out too, I'm sure!

BUT--we know God. We know, without a doubt, that He is a God who delivers--and He will go to any miraculous length to deliver one of His children from the schemes of the enemy. Besides, you can't lock up a spirit, and Peter's spirit, in tune with God, soon caught on to the plan of His wonderful Lord. If it took an angel to deliver, then so be it. His God would not forsake His servant! And He won't forsake you. Whatever your prison, He's got an angel on the way to unlock the door and set you free. God is still in the miracle-making business, so don't be spooked out by the devil's attempt to lock you up. It won't work. God's in charge--let all hell take notice--and so do we!

A snake that talks, people who walk across a sea, a door that unlocks--now to an "earth person," sure, these stores are real spooky. But to a child of God, it's no spook! It's evidence of a supernatural God who can do anything for anyone who believes. Need to resist the power of the deceiving serpent? Need a way across YOUR Red Sea? Need to be set free? HE is there, in all circumstances of life--to defend and deliver you! He may surprise you, but He will never SPOOK you; He may test you, but He will never leave you. He's your God and you can depend on Him in all the darkness to bring you through every devil temptation, every Red Sea crossing and every prison trial. How can we know for sure? Well, we've read the end of the Book--and one thing we know--WE WIN!

...and that's just a word or two from my heart to yours!

"Lord, I've been "spooked out" by the enemy of my soul long enough. I believe You can do wonders--
and I need a personal miracle. Help me now! In Jesus' Name, Amen.
