'Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
But I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards;
I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned--
The dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation with all of my might.
Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation!
So I raced to the kitchen,
Flung open the door,
And gazed at the fridge full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
'Till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground!
I crashed through the ceiling, floated into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie,
But I managed to yell
As I soared past the trees,
"Happy eating to all--
pass the cranberries, please!"
...for the taxes that I pay because it means that I am employed.
...for the mess to clean after a party because it means I have been
surrounded by friends.
...for the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough
to eat.
...for my shadow who watches me work because it means I am out in the sunshine.
...for a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that
need fixing because it means I have a home.
...for all the complaining I hear about the government because it means we
have freedom of speech.
...for the spot I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I
am capable of walking.
...for the lady behind me in church who sings off key because it means that
I can hear.
...for the piles of laundry and ironing because it means I have clothes to wear.
...for weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I
have been productive.
...for the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means
that I am alive.
...for getting too much e-mail because it lets me know I have friends who
are thinking of me.
