Here we sit on Peggie's front lawn, all 5,000 of us, looking for some FOOD! There's none to be found (imagine Peggie's place with NO food!)--except some little boy down the street who's got a sack lunch--and he's not ABOUT to share it with anybody, let alone the crowd on Peggie's front lawn!
OK, I'm just having some fun but I HAVE got your attention and you know where I'm going...it wasn't Peggie's front lawn; it was a hillside in the Holy Land; and that crowd of 5,000 did not even count the women and kids (imagine not counting US!); and the little boy DID share his lunch. It was quite a day--and there WAS food for all!
Another time...another day, and Jesus sits beside the well. A woman of Samaria comes by to draw water, and finds, to her surprise, the Son of God who knows all about her--her deep, dark past, her long-unquenched thirst--and offers her a drink of living water so she need never thirst again. It was quite a day--and there WAS a drink for one woman that day, the woman at the well.
Let's admit it--we like the numbers, whether it's a pastor counting his growing congregation or a webmaster counting her increasing hits. Five thousand for a congregation--or a web page--sounds pretty good--and we ARE glad we don't have to feed them! But, stop! Look at Jesus, the Son of God--who ministers food to one group, drink to another--and the ratio is 5,000 to ONE! Did ONE soul matter to the Lord? Yes, FIVE thousand times YES! He speaks some of His most profound words to ONE woman, to ONE rich young ruler, to ONE Nicodemus, to ONE thief on the Cross--and to YOU and ME!
We may be one - and only one - but each of us is special in God's eyes. He'll feed the crowds--and the crowds are fine--but He'll not walk away from ONE woman or ONE man, wherever on Planet Earth they may be.
You see, God is not concerned with sensation; he is concerned with souls...your soul, my soul--your needs, my needs--and the needs of a whole world, ONE at a time. What are YOU needing from the Lord today? A word? A touch? A drink? He's sitting by the Well this day to meet that need--YOU are important to Him. Believe it--and have a wonderful day!
