San Diego, California, is a beautiful city "by the sea." Today the only sign of beauty you may see is the outpouring of love, compassion and comfort surrounding grieving students, staff and families following a tragic high school shooting on Monday, March 5. Two young students dead, 13 students and staff wounded--and a city in grief, loss, disbelief, shock--and sadness. Our hearts break and we join Christians around the world in prayer for the heartbroken and hurting in this lovely city by the sea.
Another time, another place--and we see Jesus drawing near to the old, lovely city of Jerusalem. The Holy Scriptures tells us, "And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it (Luke 19:41)." Can we not believe He weeps with us today over the City of San Diego, and over every city, town, and countryside where people He died for do desperate acts of sin and violence; where people make choices that forever wound and change the lives of others. Who but God knows what lies deep in the heart of one who commits the violence; who but God knows what lies deep in the heart of loved ones who must cope with the consequences of the violence committed.
Answers? We don't have them; He does--and we must trust Him. He does not cause tragedy; but He IS there with us in it. And what good can come out of such horror? Only He knows. But know that He is able to use tragedy to turn hearts towards each other and towards Himself--it happened at Columbine (Littleton, Colorado), and it can happen here. GOD can touch teens around the world--out of grief can come His glory; out of sadness, His joy.
God, help us all--as You once wept over the city of Jerusalem, let us weep with You today over the cities of our world--the crime, the sin, the wickedness, the death, the despair. Use us as Christian believers to bring Your love, comfort and hope to someone hurting--and sad--in our world today.
