Everyone loves a hero, and currently, all eyes are on Australia! Olympic heroes abound--in our newspapers and magazines, on TV, on the Web--they're everywhere and we love it. Many reach amazing goals--personal and athletic--against unbelievable odds, and we applaud them for their courage, perseverance and skills. It's applause heard 'round the world...and while it's wonderful, I hear other applause heard 'round heaven's halls that's even greater...
If you're as old as I am (and that's old...grin!), you will remember, back in the late 50s, the news report of the martyrdom of five young missionaries in Auca Indian country. "Through Gates of Splendor," by Elisabeth Elliot, one of the young widows, told the story of these five courageous young men, bringing the Gospel to an unreached tribe and brutally speared to death by the Auca Indians. An unbelievably tragic, needless death of five of our finest! NEEDLESS?--no, edit out that word, for in years following that tribe was marvelously won to the Lord. Ten thousand Christians now blanket the area where blood once was shed.
Steve Saint, young son of martyr Nate Saint, grew up to follow in his dad's footsteps, to became a missionary to the very people who had murdered his dad. Last week I watched on video as this missionary stood "brother-to-brother" with two Auca Indians at the Amsterdam 2000 conference, both marvelously redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb! I later learned that one of these native Indians, now standing as a Christian brother beside Steve, had been the one who put the spear through the heart of Nate Saint, his dad.
Talk about heroes--I saw one, with forgiveness, Christian commitment, and mercy that only God could give, serving people that others would have written off as unreachable. One of heaven's heroes! May God touch us with the same compassion, love, and forgiveness for people in our personal worlds--family, friends, foes--who all need the Lord--and our unconditional love. Believe it--think about it--and have a blessed day!

"Lord, we bow in holy awe and humble appreciation to remember those who have given their lives for the cause of Christ; to pray for "heaven's heroes" right now doing battle in dangerous, unreached, ungodly places of our world. Give us a portion of that same love, forgiveness, mercy and commitment that we might reach the "unreachables" in our own personal worlds, In Jesus' Name, Amen."
